J Hus, the darling of UK rap, releases his highly anticipated third album, Beautiful and Brutal Yard, today. Drake, Burna Boy, Popcaan, Jorja Smith, CB, Naira Marley, Villz, and Boss Belly are among the many collaborators on the album.

After a three-year hiatus, the London rapper and global superstar returned to the scene recently with his single “It’s Crazy,” which reached the Top 15 on the Official UK Singles Charts.

A few weeks later, he released the explosive “Who Told You” Ft. Drake, which earned him the most first-week streams of 18 million worldwide and landed at #2 on the Official UK Singles Charts. He recently released “Militerian” featuring Naira Marley, along with an electrifying music video.

For those who missed him jumping on stage at Burna Boy’s recent show, J Hus recently announced his tour, which will begin on October 28th at Dublin’s 3Arena and conclude on November 5th and 6th at London’s The O2. Complete details are provided below.

The anticipation for Beautiful and Brutal Yard is at an all-time high. The title references the two sides of Hus and his heart and is named after the patois-influenced slang term for home. It follows J Hus’ sophomore album, Big Conspiracy, which was one of the most critically acclaimed albums of 2020 and earned him a BRIT Award for Best British Male. His 2017 debut album Common Sense established him as a rap champion and innovator, and in between the two albums, he nabbed multiple features from some of the music industry’s biggest artists, including Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, Skepta, and Dave.

Across its 19 tracks, Beautiful and Brutal Yard cements his status as one of the most talented in the game. “Massacre,” produced by P2J, is big-boss beach music. Over lightly plucked acoustic guitar, “Palm Trees” has a sultry late-night feel. Hus is joined on “Masculine” by Burna Boy, marking another legendary collaboration for the pair after “Play Play” from Big Conspiracy and “Cloak & Dagger” from Burna Boy’s 2022 album Love, Damini. They go verse for a verse on this one, shuffling warmly back and forth across the beat.

These jaw-dropping collaborations can be found throughout Beautiful and Brutal Yard. All of this attests to the many worlds Hus traverses with his critically acclaimed, genre-fusing music. CB appears on Hus’ high-octane, manic collaboration “Cream,” which marks new sonic territory. On “Militarian,” Gambia to Nigeria collaborates with fellow superstar artist Naira Marley.

It’s another example of Hus transporting listeners, this time to the summer heat of Lagos. The title alludes to the spiritual ethos that has permeated his music since its inception.

“They know we’re an African badman / anywhere we go we gotta stand strong”, he breathes, “when they ask me where I come from / I tell them straight, I’m an African.” Hus then goes on to mention how he shares that kinship with afro-bashment legend Naira: “Nigerian / Gambian / Militarian / Marlian”.

Jorja Smith pops up on slowed-down heater “Nice Body” – a track about sticking with one another toward the future and an end goal. “I know you’ve got some trauma that you’re hiding / life is rough, but we’re surviving “ sings Jorja, with the pair joining in showstopping unison before the end of the verse, ultimately finishing each other’s lines as Hus strolls back into view.

Popcaan is beaming down from space to contribute a high-pitched, laser-canon vocal to the terminally warped, psychedelic stomper “Killy.” It’s one of the album’s most trippy moments, built for sipping “Remy,” as Poppy mentions. Those otherworldly vibes continue on “BimBim,” a track highlighted by haunting vocals that seem to emerge in unison from the grave, somewhere behind the clouds, or the next life.

All roads lead back to the music for Hus. When you look closely at the album title Beautiful and Brutal Yard, you’ll notice an acronym: baby. Music is Hus’ baby, whether it’s brutal, beautiful, or somewhere in the middle. This is never more apparent than on his third studio album. The scene has been set. Uju Militer, The Farda, Ezmalay, and The Ugliest (named after his clothing brand of the same name) are just a few of his monikers. There is, however, only one J Hus.
